After his resurrection, Jesus summoned the Apostles to meet him in Galilee. There, he gave them a mission that the church is called to continue: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20). The Great Commission—as Jesus’ command is often called—implies that everyone who becomes a follower of Jesus also becomes a learner. The Christian life is a life of learning.
The English word “disciple” derives from a Latin term that means “student.” As disciples of Jesus, Christians are students of the Master Teacher who guides us into truth and service. We are called to grow in our knowledge and understanding of truth and to put it into practice. At Emmanuel, we are committed to providing sound preaching in our worship services—a central means the Holy Spirit uses for our growth—as well as many other opportunities for learning. We offer Christian education classes (Sunday school) for children through adults and we encourage everyone to participate. We also have a variety of Bible studies that meet during the week. Our church library has books and videos available to borrow that cover Biblical studies, theology, church history, Christian living, and many other useful topics.
